Russia’s Nuclear Industry in Times of War: The Transformation of Rosatom’s Operations
Join us at the Bellona Foundation on May 13th as we host a forum at our headquarters in Oslo, Norway, to discuss challenges in the Russian nuclear sector. At the event we will present our new report on the current state of Russia’s nuclear industry.
Today, Rosatom, Russia’s state nuclear corporation, is one of the Kremlin’s most critical and lavishly funded state-controlled corporations. It receives substantial government support and is run by members of President Putin’s inner circle.
Since the invasion of Ukraine, Rosatom has expanded its military segment, incorporating the development of components for non-nuclear weapons and other military technologies. Despite strict sanctions and restricted access to some Western markets, Rosatom continues to circumvent sanctions and maintain operations. Given all this, we attempt to answer questions about the current state of Russia’s nuclear giant, and to shed some light on its future prospects.
Discussion Topics:
Rosatom’s involvement in the war
- How is Russia’s nuclear industry involved in the war in Ukraine?
- What is the disposition of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), the largest nuclear facility in Europe?
- What technologies is Rosatom developing for the Russian military?
Russia’s nuclear industry
- How does Rosatom function today, and what is its role in the country’s economy and energy market?
Rosatom on the international nuclear market
- Nuclear fuel supplies to EU countries
- Rosatom’s international projects in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, as well as in post-Soviet Central Asian states
- The nuclear giant’s influence on other nations
International sanctions and their effectiveness
- Which sanctions have been imposed on Russia’s nuclear industry?
- What further actions could be taken to halt the financial flows supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine?
Bellona will present an in-depth analysis of developments, featuring insights from experts, researchers and representatives of European and Norwegian authorities. Participants will have the opportunity to submit questions in advance or during the live broadcast.
